Beauty Has No Bounds: I Talk With Jody About Body Positivity!

When Jody contacted me about a shoot and shared that she too was a body positive advocate & interested in working together, I was like “hell yeah, let’s do this!” Body Positivity is a message we all need to share with EVERY ONE more often because regardless of your size, shape or age we’ve all been there- feeling not good enough and stuck in a cycle of self judgement. And it needs to stop so we can get on with our lives with joy and acceptance in our hearts. #beautyhasnobounds

I’m turning it over to Jody for some Q & A

What does body positivity mean to you? And why?

To me body positivity is loving your body and having confidence. You are born with one body and live with it every single day. Treat it with love and kindness. My body actually made 2 human beings AT THE SAME TIME. And my body changed with that and continues to change as I get older. As it changes so does my love for it.

I believe it also means loving EVERY BODY. Every body is beautiful in it's own unique way and we should love and celebrate our differences. As women we are the worst critics to ourselves and other women.

Another one of the influences on body positivity is fat acceptance. People can be mean and cruel in this world and they don’t need to be. My body fat doesn’t affect others in any way so they should have no opinion on the matter.

What was your motivation to become a body positive advocate?

My twin girls. They are 3 now and over the last few years I have learned to love my body for what it has done for me. Sure I have fat, rolls, and stretch marks but I love it.

I will always tell my girls how strong they are, how smart they are, how beautiful they are, and what their bodies can do. I dont want them to have a negative body image like I did growing up.

Burlesque has also had a tremendous effect on my body image. Seeing more and more body positive, fat burlesque babes on stage made me feel more comfortable in my own body.

In burlesque, it’s not size that matters to the audience, it’s confidence, and I feel that I have that on stage. You could be a size zero, but if you don’t have that confidence on the stage, people don’t respond to it as well. You can be any size. You can be thin, you can be thick, you can be in the middle, you can be a guy, you can be hairy, you can be non-binary, you can be trans — it doesn’t matter with burlesque. We love everybody.

What adversity or struggles have you personally faced in your life when it comes to body image- as a child, teen and adult? And how has that affected the thoughts you have had about yourself?

As a child, teen and even young adult I struggled with my body image as most have. Eating disorders, crazy diets and fads as well as going to the gym twice a day.

People dont realize how words can stay with someone especially when they are so young. My brother and his friends used to call me "thunder thighs" and would actually taunt me by singing the AC/DC song. As I came into my own body postivity I realized these thighs are strong, and I actually have a Burlesque number as Ursula the Sea Witch to the song "Thunder Thighs" by Miss Eaves.

What advice would you give to someone who suffers from a poor body image? How have you dealt with it? How or where did you find your happy place?

Squash the negativity! If you are around someone who is talking negatively either about themselves, or others, shut it down. Say something. Spread love.

I feel that being around other like minded individuals has helped a lot. Our Burlesque community is so inclusive that I feel at home. Also do something that makes YOU happy. Something that gives you that exhilaration and rush! Start slow if you need to, pick one thing you love about yourself and start there.

How do you feel about your body now?

I love my body. Yes I do have days where I dont feel the love as strong but I know deep inside that I love myself and it doesnt matter what anyone else says.

Also helps that I have grown up and just dont care what other people have to say.

As Rupaul says, "If they ain't payin' your bills, pay them bitches no mind."

What do you want girls and women to know?

Be kind to each other. You never know what someone is going through.

As Mama Ru says "If you cant love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else". And it's so true!!!

Jody’s Shoot Inspiration

Once I saw Jody’s style, I HAD to do an Old Hollywood style shoot with a nod to Dita Von Teese. And I think we naillllled it haha (yes, totally quoting Colton Underwood lol).
